This article talks about the shooting that occurred in UCLA on Wednesday June 1, 2016. Not much information has been released about the situation, but what is currently known is that a student shot his professor then killed himself in a murder suicide. This is a sad situation due to how it can happen at any campus and for it to happen in California just makes it a little closer to home. When I read this article I thought of my professor and how they must feel having that type of fear in the back of their minds. With so much that they for us as students for them to have to worry about this saddens me. On the other side of this I think about Laura's topic about young adults and stress and this is something that can be said of how stress might lead to problems like these. Hopefully more can be done to try to prevent situation like these. A sad situation at UCLA and I wish the best to all the families involved.

5/26/2016 0 Comments ROCK THE VOTEThis article talks about how voter registration is up this year in the state of California. This year there is close to 2 million new voters, which is such an amazing thing. This quarter we have been talking about current events and everything that happening around us, so it’s amazing to see that people all around us are probably doing the same thing. The article states that Hispanic voters has gone up 128% for this election. I feel that has to do because of Trump and his stance on Mexicans. When I read this it could not but think of only vote doesn’t matter speech that most people give. It just shows that if enough feel the same about sometime and they want to make a change that one vote can become millions. Maybe Trump is making America great again just not in how he feels it should be great. Due to Trump more people are planning to head to polls this upcoming election to make sure that he does not get into office. In the article it also states that young voters are up about 80 percent. I felt this article was right for the course since when talked about how young people don’t really care about politics, yet this article is saying that in California a large number of young people have registered to vote this year. The majority of new people that have registered this year are also democrats so that just shows how much people do not want Trump to win! I like that Americans are standing together to keep America great. Unlike Trumps views I feel that allowing people from all over the world to be able to have a fresh start which allows them to make something of themselves is what makes America Great. Hopefully all of the new voters take the next step and make it to the polls.
5/11/2016 0 Comments Chef Curry With The ShotYesterday Stephen Curry became the 1st player in NBA history to win the MVP award unanimously. Lets just stop to acknowledge how great of an accomplishment that is. While that is such an amazing thing, there is still people that want to make excuses for their own teams or other players not being able to do what Curry and the Golden State warriors are doing right now. Last year after the Warriors won the NBA championship many critics starting saying that they got lucky, that they didn't face some of the harder teams due to those teams losing. Not too many people outside of the Bay Area has really paid them the respect they deserve. These guys went out and worked just as hard as anyone else, they faced the same odds that every other NBA team did, and they were able to overcome what others could not. I feel this article is only right. In the article the author states all of Curry's accomplishments, yet he states them in a sarcastic tone, which makes for fun reading. I enjoy how he takes what excuses people can make and states them, this then lets people see how they take credit away were credit is due. I like how he states that Curry missed 484 three pointers so it sounds like man he missed a lot of shots, yet he made 403 of those, which is 45 percent from shooting which is unheard of when you take that many volume shots. This author is able argue his point with only using the argument of naysayers. With so much violence and crime in Oakland we need a feel good story like the Warriors to bring hope to that wonderful city!
5/3/2016 0 Comments Public Enemy #1This article explores the issue of why the Obama administration never released photos of the Bin Landen's body after he was shot by navy seals. A former seal that was there when his body was shot, states that after he was shot a few times, everyone took a turn shooting more rounds into his dead body. When it was all done more than a hundred rounds were emptied into his body. His body was so mangled that they did not feel the American People need to see such an image. It also states that during war it is legal to shot some extra shots to make sure its a kill, yet what they did to Bin Laden was maybe against the law. So the photos not being posted were not just for censorship, they were also part of a secret agenda. The government did not want an investigation into the matter, due to some people maybe being arrested. This ties into almost all the topics we have been talking about thus far in class. 1st they decide to not post the picture to censor the war, and the government also had other motives for not releasing the photos. Years later that the dust has settled the truth is coming out. I kind of understand why these pictures were not posted, at the time he was the most hated man in America, it would of caused an unwanted conflict between Americans at a time where the government wanted a sense of closure. Even though he did murder many innocent people, was it warranted that soldiers shot him more than he needed to be out of joy or aggression. This all ties back to the issues with war. Although we have a set of rules when we are in war, at the end of the day war is about winning and justice. With that in mind sometimes peoples morals are lost.4/29/2016 2 Comments TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP!Trump is causing mayhem again at his rallies. Trump was in California this week and many protesters met at this hotel to show him that he is not liked! As of right now it is looking like Trump is winning the republican party GOP nomination. Reading this article, it has me thinking, why would we want a person that causes so much mayhem as our president? Although he does rile things up, can it be the way the media reports on Trump that adds more fuel to the fire. I think that anything that is Trump, the news makes sure they use any tactic they can to catch our attention. In this article, they have the headline that says "Protesters Swarm Trump Event In California as Tensions Rise", just off the back they begin with a hook, and they use the upper and lower case font to catch the eye. As I read the article is not really about posters that swarmed an actual event, but about protesters that showed up at his hotel and how they began to riot a bit. In the article they failed to mention the amount of people that showed up to the hotel to protest, yet the picture they posted implies that it was a lot of people. This photo is shot with a narrow view so visual it seems like there’s more going on that really is. I feel that this is the type of misleading news that hurts our country. I would of liked if this article stated the amount of people that were protesting to have a better understanding of how Californians really feel about Trump. They go on to state that he spoke the next day and about 8,000 people showed up and there were riots after as well. Now when they give me that number of 8,000 and not state how many people actually rioted, it forces me to make my own assumptions based on the "facts" that they provided. When you force your readers to make assumptions I feel that it’s not efficient reporting of the news. I feel that news is trying to keep the fire that is Trump chaos going, and by omitting certain facts they will do just that. 4/27/2016 0 Comments Visual Hooks! When I read this article the thing that stands out to me is the ridiculous photos of the two presidential candidates. This is a type of bias that Brooke Gladstone talked about in her book " The Influencing Machine." This is called a visual bias, the editors decided to post a picture that was going to hook its readers. I think the photo did the trick, it not only has me thinking whats going on this pictures, it also forces me to read the article to receive some insight on why this picture was posted. I read the article and this goofy picture has nothing to do with what the article is about. The article is about the race and who is leading polls, yet they chose a silly picture to grab our attention to read the article. I feel if they would of chosen a more serious picture of them, I would of not been inclined to clink the link and read it.
4/12/2016 0 Comments Their Anti-LGBT, We're Anti-Them!Right when you read the head line what jumps out is that the Governor is backing down, but then they add ".... a bit...., so its a little misleading at 1st, as Gladstone said they are trying to catch our attention. Another thing this piece is from the LA Times, so as most of know there is a large LGBT community in Los Angeles. I feel like Gladstone pointed out in here book, journalist are going to write for their audiences, in this case for that community. This piece talked about the bad that has come from the laws that were set into place that took some rights away from LGBT citizens in North Carolina. I feel that in some way they want to report mostly negative results to get their readers in LA happy about the resentment and financial repercussions that has come with these laws. Lets say this was a paper in North Carolina, maybe they would omit some of those facts to allow their audience to enjoy what they are reading. While reading this article there were a few statements stated as facts, but were actually options since they weren't factually proven. For example "“The sweeping discrimination law he signed has already cost North Carolina hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in revenue,” Cooper said." This statement was from the District Attorney General from NC, we have no way of knowing if what he said is true, since he did not show us proof, also how can he know that the money lost is due to the actions of the governor and not another factor. Reading through the article a majority of it was comments from people, and business that did not like what was going on in that state, so there those are opinions of people. One fact that was presented was from PayPal, they stated that due to this they were going to abandon the plan to bring 400 jobs to the state. Their source is creditable since its the spokesperson for PayPal, and their job is to speak to the media and let the public know about what they are doing.
